Pingyao, Shanxi, China

Initially, I had planned to spend the whole week in Beijing, but my friends suggested a short trip to Pingyao in the Shanxi province. Pingyao is a walled city that dates from the 15th century. It has preserved almost intact its traditional architecture, so it is a good option to see what Imperial China was like.… Continue reading Pingyao, Shanxi, China

Summer Palace, Beijing, China

The Summer Palace was probably my favorite place in Beijing. It is a large complex of lakes, gardens and palaces. I covers an area of almost 3 square kilometers. I spent many hours walking around this place. It was slightly cold and very peaceful.

Temple of Heaven, Beijing, China

After spending an amazing weekend with my friends, I was on my own on Monday. They had to go to work and left me with a Lonely Planet guide as my companion. I went to the Temple of Heaven and spent most of the afternoon there. The Autumn weather was great, somewhat cold but still… Continue reading Temple of Heaven, Beijing, China

The Great Wall, China

My friends arranged everything to visit The Great Wall on Sunday. They surprised me when they told me that a common friend of us was traveling to Asia and had a 12-hour layover in Beijing, so he and his travel companions would join us.  We went to the section of the Wall located in Mitianyu. It… Continue reading The Great Wall, China

It is home to more than 230 species of birds, an many more that arrive in winter. A visit to this places… Continue reading Keoladeo National Park, Rajasthan

Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh

I made a day trip Fatehpur Sikri the first weekend of October. Located 35 km from Agra, this walled city has a very interesting history. It was founded in 1569 by Mughal Emperor Akbar. It took approximately 15 years to be built, and it served as the capital of the Mughal Empire since 1571 to… Continue reading Fatehpur Sikri, Uttar Pradesh

Pondicherry, Puducherry

I traveled to Pondicherry with a friend during the fourth weekend of September. Pondy, as the town is affectionately called, sits along the Indian South coast, facing the Bay of Bengal. It was a French colony since 1674 until 1954. Today, it is the capital of the territory of Puducherry. Compared to most towns in India,… Continue reading Pondicherry, Puducherry

Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Delhi is the first place I've lived in where a mountain is not immediately visible, which I find somewhat sad. Volcanoes and mountains dominate the landscape of most of Mexico. In a clear morning, you can see Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl from many points in Mexico City. As a child, I would spend many weekends at… Continue reading Kangra Valley, Himachal Pradesh

Old Delhi, Delhi

I have been to Old Delhi on multiple occasions, usually with friends that are visiting Delhi for the first time. I always take them to Jama Masjid and the Red Fort. I know that there is a lot more to explore in Old Delhi but I usually shy away from it because the area is… Continue reading Old Delhi, Delhi

Bodhgaya, Bihar

Bodhgaya is the most sacred place in Buddhism. Tradition tells that prince Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha, meditated under a bodhi tree during 49 days, at the end of which he reached enlightenment. King Ashoka was the first to build a shrine in this place around 250 BCE. The present temple was built during the Gupta Empire around… Continue reading Bodhgaya, Bihar
